Our Team

John Ibbett - Chairman
A passionate and highly regarded expert in agriculture and property, John’s combination of commercial and environmental vision has been fundamental to BIOGEN’s formation and growth, and recently the formation of BiogenGreenfinch.
John is a graduate of Harper Adams Agricultural College and represents the third generation of the Ibbett family's ownership and management of the Bedfordia Group. He has worked for the Group since 1982 and has been Chairman and Chief Executive since 1995.

Richard Barker - CEO
Richard brings a wealth of managerial and strategic experience needed to drive the business forward. He has an understanding of the commercial opportunities which are available to the business and the complex issues facing emerging technologies.
Richard started his career in Management Consultancy and Investment Banking before moving into general management in entrepreneurial businesses. Richard is no stranger to emerging environmental technologies, before joining BiogenGreenfinch he was co-founder and then Chief Executive of specialist aluminium recycling business Recovco where he led the fundraising to acquire France’s largest aluminium recycler with a turnover of over £70m. Richard is a graduate of Brasenose College, Oxford. Richard has recently joined the board at ADBA
Julian O'Neill - Finance Director
Julian has gained broad experience across a number of industries, starting out in Cable & Wireless, then moving into a variety of senior positions with a range of organisations including both finance and IT roles at board level and most recently as finance director of Thomson Airways. Julian is a qualified accountant and has an MBA from Warwick Business School.
Julian has responsibility for finance, legal, tax and IT activities in BiogenGreenfinch and works alongside the CEO on all strategic and tactical initiatives.

Andrew Needham - Operations Director
An established expert on AD technology and application, Andrew frequently presents at industry events where his combination of farming and AD expertise make him uniquely qualified to advise on new developments. Andrew is a graduate of Harper Adams College and has an MBA from Nottingham University.
It was Andrew’s research into Anaerobic Digestion back in 2002 that led to the development of the BIOGEN concept and the reality of its first AD plant in Bedfordshire. Andrew also remains a Director of Bedfordia Farms- one of the top 20 largest farms in the UK.

Michael Chesshire - Non Executive Director
As the founder of Greenfinch, Michael developed the business into the leading UK AD technology provider before it merged with BIOGEN. With over 30 years of process engineering experience and expertise Michael served first as Technology Director and now as a non-executive director on the Biogen Board. He also acts as a consultant to the company, helping to drive forward the strategy and technical development of BiogenGreenfinch.
Michael is a well known and highly respected figure within the anaerobic digestion industry. He is a Director of the Renewable Energy Association and is a visiting Professor at Southampton University

Mike Betts - Non Executive Director
Mike Betts joined the Biogen Board as a Non-Executive Director in July 2011. Mike is the CEO of Motability Operations, the UK's largest vehicle leasing company with over 450,000 vehicles. He is responsible for driving the performance of all aspects of the business. He also leads the management of the various stakeholder relationships. Mike's tenure has been charcterised by him as the author and driving force of the change programmes that have created what is considered by all stakeholders a truly commercial and customer focussed business culture.
Mike is a member of the Employers' Forum on Disability President's Group. Prior to joining Motability Operations, Mike spent ten years with Dial Contracts Limited, the last three as Managing Director. he successfully led the UK element of the sale to ABN AMRO Lease Holdings and was then responsible for overseeing the subsequent merger. Prior to that Mike spent nine years with Thorn EMI Business Communications.

John Carolin - Director of Commercial and Business Development
John trained originally as an engineer with Arup in London but then spent 24 years in the chemicals industry in the UK, USA, Japan and Germany where he held a series of increasingly senior international business development, marketing and general management roles. In 2007 he left Linde AG, where he was Head of Energy Innovation, to pursue his interests in alternative energy and clean technology.
He has a BSc in civil engineering from Leeds University and an MBA from the Manchester Business School. John works closely with the chief executive on strategic development and identification of new business opportunities. He also manages our business development, marketing and sales teams.

David Woolgar - Director of Engineering
David is an experienced professional engineer having qualified with Gibb in 1982 and then spending ten years as a consulting engineer in the UK, Middle East and Africa working for engineering companies in the environment, gas and petrochemical sectors. He has been involved with anaerobic digestion for over 15 years.
He has a BSc in Civil Engineering from Southampton University and is registered as a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Managers, and Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers. He has served on several committees responsible for drawing up technical and safety standards in gas engineering.
David works with our technology, innovation and business development teams in developing and implementing our business strategy. He oversees tender planning and the design, mechanical, electrical and manufacturing elements of new plants, through this forging close relationships with our customers.
John Greaves - Director of Projects
John qualified as an aerospace engineer with Dowty Group in Wolverhampton before moving into various international sales and marketing roles across aerospace, automotive, rail and process industries. After spending 5 years with Honeywell leading the company’s passenger car emissions reduction projects, John held several leadership roles focusing on cost reduction and business turnaround. With his previous company, Icon Polymer, he supported the Board in a successful management buy out.
Joining BiogenGreenfinch in 2010, John brings over 25 years of commercial, design and project management experience and is a Project Management Practitioner (APMP), PRINCE2 Practitioner and a Six Sigma Greenbelt. John is responsible for the construction of new BiogenGreenfinch AD plants and the development of new, innovative technology.
