Local authorities
The BIOGEN Integrated AD process offers significant benefits for Local Authorities, none more so than in helping them meet their responsibilities in the disposal of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) and their targets under the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS).
This new legislation, including the EU Landfill Directive, has generated statutory targets for reducing the use of landfill and placed additional controls on the disposal of BMW. The disposal of liquid wastes is becoming increasingly difficult due to the limited number of sites now licensed to accept them and only plants with approval from DEFRA can accept Animal by-Product (ABP) wastes.
In addition growing concerns and increased regulation, such as Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) have drawn Local Authority attention to the issues associated with pollution and land management; and there are increasing concerns regarding the microbiological food safety implications from the possible transfer of pathogens from organic waste (sewage sludge, animal manure and abattoir waste) to the food chain.
Local Authorities will find that BIOGEN's recycling solutions are not only at the top of the waste hierarchy but also provide a number of other benefits for the local community including new employment opportunities, improving agricultural land management and ecology, and reducing the risk of local pollution.
