Climate change
Climate change is of increasing concern globally and the move to renewable energy is a major factor in combating the problem.
The UK has signed up to the Kyoto Protocol and is committed to reducing emissions of Greenhouse gases (GHGs) down to 12.5% below their 1990 levels over the next ten years.
The Renewables Obligation is the Government's main policy measure to encourage the development of electricity capacity using renewable energy sources in the UK. In the waste arena Landfill Taxes and Allowances are driving down the uncontrolled GHG emissions.
- treating organic waste in a sealed and controlled system that avoids emissions of methane gas to the atmosphere
- producing a biogas which can be used to make green electricity and heat, avoiding the need for fossil fuel derived energy
- producing a nutrient rich bio-fertiliser and replacing fossil fuel based fertilisers
- providing a local waste solution that reduces the environmentally harmful effects of transportation
Interesting facts about BIOGEN's energy generation
From one tonne of kitchen waste, BIOGEN can produce enough energy to do all of the following:
- Light a 100W bulb continuously for 1 month
- … and run a 3 tonne truck for 200 miles
- … and cook 1 month’s worth of main meals
